A vehicle recall informs a car owner of a safety related issue that exists within their car. Attending to this fix in a timely manner is important. When the work is done quickly, it can keep the roads safe for everyone.
There are two benefits to a car recall. It is free for the owner of the car and it keeps a vehicle safe. The reality is, despite these benefits, Los Angles drivers are not getting their recall work done. A recent report shows a surprising number of Los Angles vehicles that carry the general public need to be recalled.
Los Angeles taxis may have recalls
The report found 1,100 out of 2,300 Los Angeles taxis had open safety recall issues. The problems included a window power switch that could overheat and bad wiring that could accidentally cause the airbags to deploy.
Taxis in Los Angeles are required to go through a “34-point inspection” every year. Checking if the vehicle has a recall is not addressed during that inspection. An easy fix for this comes by the way of a free app through Carfax that can easily tell if your car has a recall notice.
Uber and Lyft vehicles may have unchecked recalls too
Both Uber and Lyft drivers are required to have their vehicles inspected before they are allowed on the road for service. But just like taxis, checking for a recall is not part of this inspection. The responsibility falls on the Uber/Lyft car owners to stay on top of recall notices. The rideshare companies may remind drivers to check on recalls but no proof the work was completed is required.

Federal law requires manufacturers to inform car owners about a recall. Many people don’t get the notice or ignore it leaving many vulnerable cars. Manufacturers are unable to notify some car owners since they are not the original owner and an address is not available. It is the responsibility of the car owner to stay on top of all the maintenance to ensure the safety of everyone on the road. You may just want to check with your next taxi or rideshare driver to see if they are up to date on their recall work.
